For competitions and performances, students will need a specific costume.
Boys and men need black slacks and a long-sleeved collarless white or black shirt.
Beginner 1 girls can wear a black velveteen skirt and a white long-sleeved blouse with a collar, and a red ribbon tied in a bow. The girls' hair is curled or an Irish dancing wig is worn.
Levels Beginner 2 and up need to plan on making, buying, or renting a McTeggart dress for performances and competitions. Performances and competitions go on throughout the year and are important parts of an Irish dancer's schedule along with learning steps in class and practicing at home.
When girls and women reach more advanced stages, they can get a solo dress. Each solo dress is different and highly individual. You can design and sew your own, buy them from places that specialize in Irish dresses, or buy a used one locally, on eBay, or from other sites around the web.
